Admission Requirements and Enrollment Conditions

The requirements and procedures for admission to the one-cycle educational program in Dentistry are available to all interested parties in accordance with the University regulations governing the educational process, the information published on the University website, and the applicable legislation of Georgia.

Enrollment Conditions

Enrollment in the one-cycle educational program in Dentistry is permitted for individuals who possess a certificate of full general education issued in Georgia, or an equivalent document, and meet the admission requirements established by the legislation of Georgia.

Foreign citizens and stateless persons may be admitted to the program in accordance with the procedures and conditions established by Georgian legislation.

Enrollment in the Dentistry program through mobility is also possible in accordance with the applicable legislation of Georgia and the University regulations.

Field Description

Dentistry is a healthcare field focused on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases and conditions affecting the oral cavity, teeth, jaws, and related structures. It integrates biomedical sciences with theoretical, preclinical, and clinical dental education to develop the knowledge and practical competencies required for safe and effective patient care.

The field encompasses major areas of dental practice, including therapeutic dentistry, oral surgery, orthopedic dentistry, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, as well as geriatric and special needs dentistry. Modern dentistry also incorporates digital diagnostics, innovative biomaterials, minimally invasive approaches, and evidence-based clinical practice.

Dental education combines theoretical knowledge, simulation-based training, laboratory practice, and supervised clinical experience. It prepares graduates to provide patient-centered oral healthcare, apply evidence-based approaches in clinical decision-making, work effectively within healthcare teams, and engage in continuous professional development and research.

The goals of the Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) one-cycle educational program of GIU are:

To prepare highly qualified dental professionals with comprehensive knowledge of biomedical and dental sciences and the clinical competencies required for safe, effective, evidence-based, and patient-centered oral healthcare.
To develop students’ clinical reasoning and practical skills for the prevention, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, treatment planning, and management of oral and dental diseases through theoretical education, simulation-based training, and supervised clinical practice.
To develop the ability to critically analyze scientific and clinical information, apply evidence-based dentistry, use modern technologies and materials, and conduct research in the field of dentistry.
To develop professional responsibility, ethical and legal awareness, effective communication and teamwork skills, and the ability to engage in lifelong learning and continuous professional development.

Learning Outcomes of the Program

After completing the Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) program, the graduate will:

Knowledge and Understanding

Describes and explains biomedical processes in normal and pathological conditions of the human body, with particular emphasis on the oral cavity and head and neck region.
Describes the etiology, pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, prevention, diagnosis, and principles of treatment of oral and dental diseases and explains their relationship with systemic health.
Discusses the principles of evidence-based dentistry, research methodology, public and oral health, professional ethics, patient rights, and legal aspects of dental practice.

Skills

Collects and interprets relevant patient information, performs clinical assessment, identifies and differentiates oral and dental diseases and conditions, and formulates appropriate diagnoses.
Develops comprehensive, evidence-based, and patient-centered prevention and treatment plans according to the patient’s individual needs and clinical condition.
Selects and safely applies appropriate diagnostic, preventive, therapeutic, surgical, and restorative approaches, dental materials, and modern technologies within the scope of professional competence.
Integrates theoretical knowledge, clinical findings, diagnostic data, and current scientific evidence when managing complex clinical situations and patients with special healthcare needs.
Identifies and appropriately manages urgent medical conditions that may arise in dental practice and applies relevant principles of patient and practitioner safety.
Searches, critically evaluates, interprets, and applies current scientific literature and evidence-based dentistry data and participates in the planning and implementation of research activities.
Communicates effectively, orally and in writing, with patients, accompanying persons, colleagues, and other healthcare professionals and works effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team.

Performs professional activities in accordance with ethical principles, legal requirements, patient rights, professional standards, and the principles of social responsibility.

Areas of Employment

Graduates of the Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) program may work as junior doctors under the supervision of an independent medical practitioner. After completing an appropriate residency program and passing the Unified State Certification Examination, graduates may obtain the right to independent medical practice in accordance with Georgian legislation.

Graduates may also continue their education at the doctoral level and engage in research and academic activities in theoretical fields of medicine or other areas of healthcare that do not require independent medical practice.
